From Code to Orchids: Our Story
We're building the future of vanilla cultivation in the Azores—one data point, one experiment, one vine at a time.
Precision in Two Domains
I've spent my career in cybersecurity and vulnerability research—finding weaknesses in systems, understanding how precision and attention to detail prevent failure. Years ago, I had a vague dream about growing cocoa, but it was never a serious plan. Life took different turns. Then we moved to the Azores with our family, and something shifted. I found myself remembering that old idea, but this time I wanted to understand what was actually possible here.
After some research, vanilla seemed more promising than cocoa for our conditions. What started as a hobby experiment has become something real. Today, we're growing over 200 meters of vanilla vines. It's taught me that agriculture, like cybersecurity, demands precision—in temperature, humidity, light, pollination timing. The same mindset applies: observe carefully, measure everything, iterate based on what you learn. We're not trying to be experts in everything. We're just being rigorous about what we do.
Why the Azores?
Honestly, the better question is: why is vanilla NOT here already?
- EU market proximity – Quick shipping to Europe with zero tariffs, no customs delays
- Fresh volcanic soil – Naturally nutrient-rich from volcanic geology, excellent for vanilla root systems
- Clean water abundance – Pure, reliable water supply for irrigation in a climate-stable region
- Political stability & EU infrastructure – Safe investment with strong regulations, banking, and logistics
- Abundant humidity without tropical extremes
- Abundant renewable energy (geothermal, wind, hydro, solar)
- Agri-tourism opportunity – Visitors + vanilla = unique experience
No one else is trying vanilla at scale here. That's not a coincidence—it's our opportunity.
